Patient comfort enhanced through use of warm and natural material palettes accentuated by intelligent illumination. Apollo Gleneagles Cancer Hospital, Kolkata, is a 100-bedded unit including 50 bedded surgical units.
Our goal as healthcare designers in fostering wellness was by creating physical surroundings that are psychologically supportive and helps in recovery. Effective lighting designs in different areas, to ensure patient and staff safety, collaborative specification, to achieve functional efficiency and environmental sustainability were also key drivers.
Creating healing spaces in an inward looking floor-plate with no natural light was a challenge that defined the project’s focus.
Our way forward to achieve the above was by focusing on the vital factors comprising sense of control, access to social support and contact with positive distractions and no exposure to negative distractions. In a facility that is very inward looking and does not have access to natural light, it was a challenge to create interest in every stage of the treatment process. We wanted to create a warm and humane environment for Cancer patients. Therefore, a simple palette comprising high quality but low maintenance materials, natural finishes, motifs inspired by nature, diffused natural light and efficient artificial lighting with pleasing colours and warm textures that helped the flowing yet straightforward and technically sound planning was used for this facility high in technology and care.
